Process modeling of the calendering of energy-rich electrodes (ProKal)

Fördergeber: BMBF

Contact person : Alexander Diener

Zusammenfassung des Gesamtprojektes:

Within the research network ProZell, sponsored by the BMBF, the project ProKal focuses on the calendering of electrodes for the production of lithium-ion battery cells. The compaction and thus the increasing of the volumetric energy density generates the pore structure of the electrodes coating, which is decisive for the electrochemical performance. Too low porosities result in limitations of the ionic conductivity. Therefore, the objective is to develop models describing the interactions between process and product parameters regarding the generated structure and quality of the product as well as the process costs.

Objectives and tasks of the iPAT

  • Production of energy-rich NCM622 cathodes with high mass loadings including the use of conductive and pore additives
  • Investigation of the compaction process of the NCM622 cathodes as well as Si-graphite anodes in the calender by process variation to enhance the productivity and further processing
  • Analysis of the properties regarding further processing and generated electrode structure in connection with the resulting electrochemical performance
  • Combination of cathodes and anodes with most promising structures to cells with maximal, volumetric energy density
  • Development of machine process structure properties models and process cost function for the calendering process of lithium ion electrodes
