Project Summary:
The aim of the NoVOC project is to develop an environmentally friendly and non-toxic lithium-ion battery (LIB) on a pilot scale. Innovative, emission-free processes for the production of battery components and cell assembly are being trialled. The focus is on aqueous and dry electrode manufacturing processes that can significantly reduce both production costs and environmental pollution. These processes are completely free of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Their technical feasibility will be demonstrated by validating cell performance, economic efficiency and ecological benefits. The processes are initially optimised on a laboratory scale in close cooperation between R&D partners and material suppliers. They are then transferred to pilot scale together with industrial cell manufacturers. As the LIB industry relies on different cell formats, both cylindrical and pouch cell configurations are considered.
