Teaching at the IK
As an institute of the TU, student training is one of our core tasks. Therefore, you will find the most important information about our courses in this segment of the website.
We would like to provide an education that prepares the prospective engineers for their professional life as well as possible. That is why - in our "teaching policy" - we have committed ourselves to a professionally and interdisciplinarily oriented teaching. Furthermore, you will find our lectures, as well as offers for study counseling, student work and international exchange programs.
Engineers play a major role in developing new ideas and translating them into everyday applications, thereby making a significant contribution to shaping our future lives. The training of future engineers must also take this responsibility into account. Beyond technical qualifications, the individual development of students—with a focus on creativity and personal potential—must therefore be taken into account and promoted. With our teaching at the IK, we pursue the goal of practice-oriented education that is geared toward the technical and interdisciplinary challenges of future professional life and promotes the individual development of students.
The courses offered by the IK are divided into three main areas: fundamentals of design, computer-aided engineering (CAx), and product development. The majority of the courses offered can be clearly assigned to these main areas. These area-specific courses ensure that the engineering education provided at the IK provides a solid foundation of basic and application-oriented knowledge. Other courses overlap the areas of focus described above, thus ensuring an interdisciplinary education.
The courses, especially those within a specific focus area, build on each other. Therefore, the courses should be taken in a specific sequence. Information on a sensible sequence for completing the courses for the Bachelor's and Master's programs in Mechanical Engineering is listed under the heading “Courses.” Our student advisory service also offers guidance on planning the content of your studies.
An essential criterion for successful teaching is the subject-specific and interdisciplinary qualifications of the teaching staff. In order to provide you, the students, with the best possible support during the learning process, our employees participate in the basic qualification program teach4TU. As part of this continuing education program, they learn methods and strategies for preparing and conducting teaching that are directly incorporated into the design of courses at the IK. We also achieve continuous improvement of our courses through teaching visits by the teach4TU team. We also take your opinions and comments into account in our central teaching evaluations and discuss them in detail in personal conversations as a basis for the further development of our courses.
