Lab360 – Authentic 360° Videos for Science Teacher Education

Brief Description

The interdisciplinary research project Lab360 produces immersive 360-degree videos that depict authentic experimental activities by students, presents them in an interactive format, and enriches them with didactic elements. In courses during the practical phase and in the project portfolio, these videos are analyzed by master’s-level teacher education students majoring in biology, chemistry, and physics, who also evaluate the videos’ use and effectiveness. Particular focus is placed on the analysis results as well as the students’ interest and motivation. Based on the evaluation results, the multimedia learning scenarios are revised and made available as prototypes for other subjects. The project is funded by the Research Institute of Teacher Education under the open funding category for particularly innovative projects.

Project Objectives

  • Production of high-quality, practical 360° instructional videos for science teacher education (biology, chemistry, physics),
  • Enhancing understanding of experimental processes and typical student challenges in experimental problem-solving through immersive learning scenarios,
  • Promoting diagnostic and reflective skills among prospective and practicing teachers with regard to experimental problem-solving,
  • Expanding the research infrastructure at TU Braunschweig for the use of virtual reality and 360° videos in educational research

Duration: June 1, 2025 – March 31, 2026

Interdisciplinary Design of Learning Activities in the Student Lab: Biology and Mathematics in Infection Research

The project brings together content-based, empirically supported expertise from the fields of biology (Helmholtz Center for Infection Research (HZI) and the Institute of Genetics), subject-specific pedagogy (biology and mathematics), and the BioS biotechnology student laboratory. The goal is to design and evaluate programs for lower secondary school students in the context of “infection research” as part of the interdisciplinary skill area “Evaluation” in the classroom. Among other things, the project explores the extent to which the integration of authentic biological research data and methodologies helps lower secondary students understand the interrelationships within the context of infectious disease transmission and critically and analytically assess the containment measures derived from this understanding.

To realize this vision, additional funding is essential: for the expert development of new modules, the technical implementation of digital tools, and on-site evaluation. You can get involved and donate here! Further information about the project can be found here.

The project is funded through the TU Braunschweig’s Impulse Fund, Funding Line 1: Seed Funding Call Ecosystem.

Project participants: PD Dr. D. Hilfert-Rüppell, IFdN; Prof. Dr. K. Vorhölter, IDME; Prof. Dr. A. Fleißner, Institute of Genetics; Dr. med. B. Lange, Helmholtz Center for Infection Research (HZI); Dr. A. Plink and Dr. W. Hußmann, Braunschweig Biotechnology Student Laboratory (BioS)
