Leaf diversity

Riesenseerose

The adaptation of plants to their habitat can be seen in their leaves. The water supply plays a major role here. Do plants live where there is an abundance of water or do they have to fight for every drop?

The pupils learn how the leaves of plants are adapted to the factors of water and nutrients. They do not only look at the outer shape of the leaves. When they look at the leaf structures under binoculars and microscopes, they also discover the differences and adaptations in leaf structure.

The tropism of plants is also explored. Pupils investigate the stimuli that trigger movement and the benefits that movement brings.

Competences:

  •     compare differentiated structures of organs of different organisms in a criterion-guided way.
  •     use binoculars and microscopes appropriately
  •     describe structures on a cellular level
  •     carry out investigations and experiments according to instructions
  •     formulate problem-related questions and possible explanations on the basis of phenomenological observations
  •     explain that characteristics of organisms match their specific way of life
  •     draw light microscopic specimens following drawing rules
  •     draw biological structures
