The division of Organic and Wooden Based Materials at iBMB emerged in the year 2010 from the long-standing field of Structure and Application of Construction Materials. The new field was formed through collaboration between the Fraunhofer Society and the Technical University of Braunschweig and closely collaborates with the Fraunhofer Institute for Wood Research, the Wilhelm–Klauditz Institute (WKI), in Braunschweig.
This field of study addresses urgent sustainability issues related to organic construction materials in architecture and civil engineering. While the expertise of the Structure and Application of Construction Materials field regarding polymer and inorganic materials, corrosion, material and damage analysis was retained, the new field additionally focuses on organic materials used in constructions. This encompasses both structural and non-structural applications of organic materials, including plastics.
The research program of the field is continuously expanding, with research positions being newly filled. Research activities take place at the microscopic, sub-microscopic, and atomic levels to develop new organic materials as well as combinations of organic and inorganic materials for structural and non-structural applications. The research also investigates the effects of climatic influences on the properties and functions of such materials.
