Libo Yan is the recipient of several international and national awards, e.g. “IIFC Distinguished Young Researcher Award (2021)” and “IIFC Best PhD Thesis Award” from the International Institute for FRP in Construction (2016), the “Vice-Chancellor’s Prize for Best Doctoral Thesis” (2014) from the University of Auckland, “Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Self-financed Student Abroad” from China Scholarship Council (2013) and Student Travel Award from Australian Earthquake Engineering Society (2013), etc. Libo Yan was the TU Braunschweig Nominee (2018; 2019) for "Wissenschaftspreis Niedersachsen Vorschlag Kategorie II" and TU Braunschweig Nominee (2018; 2020) for Heinz Maier Leibnitz Prize at DFG, and Fraunhofer-Society Nominee (2018) for "Die Junge Akademie". From 2015 to 2021 he held the Junior-Professorship "Organic Materials in Construction" at TU Braunschweig. Prof. Yan is on the list of "World's Top 2% Scientists" (both single-year and whole career) by Stanford University from 2022 to 2024.

Prof. Yan is also the Head of Department of Centre for Light and Environmentally Friendly Hybrid Structures (ZELUBA) (https://www.wki.fraunhofer.de/en/departments/zeluba/profile.html) at Fraunhofer Institute for Wood Research (Wilhelm-Klauditz-Institut WKI). Prof. Yan is the leader of the Junior Research Group Leader (funded by Fachagentur Nachwachsende Rohstoffe, BMEL) at iBMB TU Braunschweig and Fraunhofer WKI. He was a board member of the prestigious research training group GRK2075 at TU Braunschweig. Prof. Yan has published around 160 scientific works, including 10 book chapters, over 120 ISI papers and around 30 peer-reviewed conference papers. Several of his papers have been listed as “Highly Cited Papers” by Web of Science (Clarivate Analytics). Prof. Yan also holds several patents. He is a Guest Editor of “Engineering Structures”, an “Associate Editor” for Journal of Advances in Civil Engineering and an “Associate Editor” for Journal of Frontiers in Materials. Prof. Yan is a guest editor and editorial board of Polymers and Sustainability, and the Editorial Board of Polymers, and Composite Materials and Engineering – An International Journal, etc. He has served as invited reviewer for more than 50 SCI indexed international journals and the external examiner for lots of doctoral theses at University of Florence, The University of Southern Queensland and The University of Queensland, and the expert reviewer for funding programs such as Flanders Innovation & Entrepreneurship (Belgium), United Arab Emirates, DFG (German Research Foundation), Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Czech Science Foundation and New Zealand. Prof. Yan was invited to give seminars at universities and research institutes in Germany, China, Australia, Czech Republic, New Zealand, and Slovenia.

Current areas of research interest of Prof. include lightweight and environmentally friendly hybrid building materials and structures and their recycling and reuse, e.g. concrete (recycled aggregate concrete, fibre reinforced concrete, high strength concrete, eco-concrete, geopolymer concrete), wood and bamboo, fibres and textiles, fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) composites and their hybrid materials and structures. Specifically, microstructure and mechanical properties of plastics and polymer materials used in fibre reinforced plastics (FRP) composites, creep and fatigue of polymer adhesives such as epoxy and polyurethane, development and design of (glass, carbon, basalt and plant-based natural flax) textile reinforced concrete and FRP composites, FRP-steel composite, recycled aggregate concrete, timber engineering, mid- and high-rise timber buildings subjected to wind-induced vibration, bamboo, natural and synthetic FRP and geopolymer composites, dynamics and numerical simulation of composite structures, impact response of FRP-concrete hybrid structures, high performance cementitious composites and durability of construction materials, as well as recycling, reuse and recovery of plastics, construction and demolition, agricultural and forestry sector.
