Thesis Topics

The Chair for Mobile Electric Energy Systems offers thesis for the topics of on-board power systems and the electification of vehicles. The topics are open for students of different courses (e.g., electrical engineering, industrial engineering, physics, computer science or mechanical engineering) and the focus can be arranged individually.

Should you be looking for a supervisor for a thesis in the industry with relation to the electrification of vehicles (cars, aircraft, ships, satellites, trains,...) or if you have any questions about the theses, please contact Prof. Dr. Michael Terörde.

Available Thesis Subjects:

[B.Sc. / M.Sc.] Model Development or Improvement of the Electrical Network of an Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing Aircraft (eVTOL)

Note: This thesis is especially suitable for Bachelor/Master students from the field of electrical engineering, power systems engineering, power electronics, and renewable energy engineering students who are interested in working in projects related to the electrification of aircrafts.

The thesis can be written in German or English.

Introduction: Urban Air Mobility (UAM) shows great potential for passenger or cargo air transportation within urban or metropolitan areas. The utilization of electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft is suitable for zero emission and noise free urban air transportation. Companies and researchers are working to develop safe and reliable UAM solutions. In the project ETHAN, which stands for 'Secure and reliable electric and thermal networks for hybrid-electric propulsion systems' in German, we are working with industry partners like Rolls-Royce Electrical and other Universities to develop environmentally friendly and secure electrical and hybrid electrical propulsion systems for eVTOLs and smaller aircraft with 19 passengers capacity.

[M.Sc.] Reliability Assessment of Different Electrical Power System Architectures in Electrified/Hybrid Future Passenger Aircrafts

Note: This thesis is recommended to those electrical engineering Master students who are familiar with electrical onboard power system components and are interested in working on analysis of different power system architectures.

The thesis should be written in English.

Introduction: Electrifying aircraft is a big step forward in aviation, offering a greener and more efficient way to fly. By using electric propulsion systems fueled by batteries or fuel cells, it promises to change how planes operate. The transition from traditional combustion engines to electric motors introduces a paradigm shift in aircraft design, emphasizing the critical role of electrical components and systems. This master thesis should investigate on the pivotal importance of reliability of Electrical Power System (EPS) in electrified passenger aircraft, exploring the challenges, innovations, and strategies necessary to ensure that electrical power systems meet the very strict standards of safety and performance demanded by the aviation industry.

[M.Sc.] Protection Algorithm for a Series-Hybrid-Electric Aircraft Propulsion System

Note: This Master thesis is especially suitable for students from the field of electrical engineering, power systems engineering, power electronics, and renewable energy engineering students who are interested in working in projects related to the electrification of aircrafts.

The thesis can be written in German or English.

Introduction: The aviation industry is moving to electrification of aircraft to reduce emissions and fuel costs. It is still a challenge to safely operate the onboard electrical power distribution network of the aircraft propulsion system. In the project ETHAN (Secure and reliable electric and thermal networks for hybrid-electric propulsion systems), we are working with industry partners like Rolls-Royce Electrical and other Universities to develop environmentally friendly and secure electrical and hybrid electrical propulsion systems for eVTOLs and smaller aircraft with 9 passengers’ capacity (Pax9). A high degree of safety is a parameter that needs to considered in the development of these aircrafts. In the Chair of Mobile Electric Energy Systems, we develop electrical models for these aircrafts and test protection strategies and algorithms in simulations and real-time hard ware like Opal-RT and Speedgoat.
