Supervision of technical- / industrial internship

In general, the elenia Institute guarantees all students who have Prof. Michael Kurrat or Prof. Bernd Engel as mentor the supervision of their specialized internship or industrial internship. All other requests to take over the supervision of the internship will be examined individually.

Each specialized internship must be reported to the responsible academic staff member before it begins, whether through mentoring or a request to take over. Further information on the subject internship can be found in the Internship Guidelines, found on the Faculty 5 website and the FAQ listed below. The start notification for the specialized internship can also be found there and must be filled out by the student upon request and submitted to the Institute's office, indicating the responsible academic staff member. After completing the internship, you must prepare an internship report and give a final presentation after examining it. Please check the FAQ before asking questions about the internship or the associated final presentation.

The responsible scientific staff members are:

  • Prof. Bernd Engel
    • Till Garn
  • Prof. Michael Kurrat
    • Marvin Nebelsiek

Please contact the responsible research assistant directly for all matters relating to the internship, including inquiries as to whether your internship can be supervised individually, and refrain from contacting Professors Kurrat and Engel directly.

Note regarding the FAQ

Please note that the following information is not guaranteed to be complete and is only valid for internships supervised by the elenia Institute. All answers are based on the current internship guidelines of the EITP faculty. It is therefore strongly recommended that you read them.

FAQ on the supervision of the technical- / industrial internship

For which students does the elenia Institute supervise internships?
I don't know who my mentor is.
I have been accepted for an internship and am unsure whether the activities fit into the elenia subject area.
My request for internship supervision has been approved, what do I need to consider before starting the internship?
Is it possible to complete the bachelor's and master's internships together or directly one after the other?

Yes, that is possible. To do so, the activities for the master's portion must correspond to the “engineering-related activities” specified in the internship guidelines (see 1.2.2.). The start notification can be completed for both parts (bachelor's and master's) at the same time. If the reports are written in one document, it is important that the bachelor's part is recorded separately from the master's part. The master's portion (12 LP) will be credited to the bachelor's program as an additional master's achievement after approval.

FAQ about the internship report

How long should my internship report be?

The length should be one to two A4 pages of continuous text per week. In addition, there should be a cover page and a table of contents.

What content should I include in my internship report?

In addition to technical or economic descriptions of the areas of work, work topics, and their implementation, the report should also include descriptions of your own activities and experiences and a personal conclusion. The following questions may provide some inspiration: What did I learn during the internship? How was the internship organized? How was the cooperation with superiors and colleagues, training, role in meetings, business trips? What problems, setbacks, solutions, and solution strategies were there? Which study contents were required or deepened? The internship report can address the non-subject-related skills and experiences acquired during the internship.

What do I need to bear in mind regarding the format of the internship report?

A comprehensive report covering several weeks should be preceded by an overview of the technical and temporal structure of the relevant internship section. A tabular overview should therefore be inserted immediately before the table of contents. Furthermore, the cover page should contain the following information: name, degree program, semester, company, date of report submission. Otherwise, there are no further formatting requirements. However, elenia recommends: font Arial, font size 12. A possible template can be found in the StudIP group for the colloquium at elenia.

In what form is the internship report submitted?

The internship report must be printed out; digital submission is currently not possible. As the report is a document, either each page must be stamped and signed by the responsible training supervisor, or the bound report must be stamped and signed once (on the cover page). The report must be submitted to the elenia Institute office (room 206 on the 2nd floor, Schleinitzstraße 23). Please ask the staff there to place the report in the pigeonhole of the supervising research assistant. Please also note the information on what needs to be submitted.

Note: To conserve resources, it is recommended that you send a digital version of the internship report to your supervisor for review before printing.

Where do I submit the internship report?

The report should be submitted to the elenia Institute office (room 206 on the 2nd floor, Schleinitzstraße 23). Please ask that the report be placed in the postbox of the supervising research assistant. It is also possible to send the report by post.

What do I have to hand in?

In addition to the internship report, the completed, stamped, and signed internship certificate must be submitted. A form for this can be found in Appendix 3 of the internship guidelines.

I received fewer credits for my professional internship than I expected.

Please contact Faculty 5 EITP directly with any questions regarding the credit points awarded for the specialized internship. elenia has no influence on the crediting of the specialized internship and only reports its successful completion to the faculty.

FAQ on the final presentation for the internship

How long is the final presentation?
What content should the final presentation contain?
How should the slides be designed?

For example, you can use a template from the company or the template from the StudIP group for the colloquium at elenia. A guide to presentation design has also been uploaded to the StudIP group.
