Who was Agnes Pockels?

Agnes-Pockels-Labor

Agnes Pockels (1862-1935) lived as a housewife and chemist in Braunschweig, Germany. At a time, when most women were largely excluded from studying the natural sciences, she investigated surface phenomena by the most simple experimental techniques, having made her first observations while doing the dishes. Her scientific results subsequently provided the basis for the Langmuir balance/Langmuir trough to study surface films on a quantitative and exact basis. More ...

Our goals, our concept

We want

to introduce children (even of kindergarten age) and high school students to the exact sciences

to support the teaching of chemistry on the k-12 level

to enhance the self-awareness and self-reliance of girls as far as their scientific capabilities are concerned

to co-operate closely with teachers on the development of new experiments for class room teaching

We provide

experiments for children and students of all age groups (k-12)

support for science days and working groups

experimental chemistry kits

lab days for groups in the APS laboratory

continuous education for kindergarten, grade school, and high school teachers (in partnership with the Lehrerfortbildungszentrum)

New fuel-cell experiment kits in the Agnes-Pockels-Laboratory

Foto Kerstin Weir

This donation for fuel-cell experiment kits was provided by Dr Diarmid Weir of Edinburgh, Scotland, on behalf of and in memory of his wife Kerstin Birgit (/geb/. Obierey) who completed her Dr. rer. nat at TU Braunschweig in 1994. Kerstin loved the university and the city of Braunschweig. She believed strongly in the importance of practical learning in science, and the role of science for a sustainable future.

On 08 December 2014 Dr. Diarmid Weir visited the Agnes-Pockels-Laboratory. Participating in a students´ working group he was able to assure himself of the motivating effects of the new experiment kits.

Sustainable Chemistry: The Agnes-Pockels-School-Laboratory develops new educational subjects

Since September 2010, the Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt (DBU) supports the development of new experiments and materials in field of "cycling matter and conservation of resources" at the Agnes-Pockels-Laboratory. Experiments are conceived for primary schools and secondary schools (1st - 10th class, age 6-16). They will be tested in collaboration with a partner school. The two-year project plan comprises the topics: cycling matter / recycling / composting, heat isolation, catalysis and renewable resources.

On the occasion of the International Year of Chemistry, the Agnes-Pockels-Laboratory is presented in the journal Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry ( P. Mischnick, Anal. Bioanl. Chem. 400(6), 2011, 1533-1535 ).
