To request an academic leave, submit an application (via TUconnect or by submitting the form). During your academic leave, you will retain all your rights as a member of the university. You are usually not entitled to sit exams, though. Academic leaves do not count as program semesters.

You may apply for an academic leave of up to 4 semesters and you may be absent for no more than two semesters in a row. In the cases of sickness and childcare, exceptions may be made (for example, a leave of absence may also be granted for the period during which the employee would be entitled to parental leave if an employment relationship existed). An academic leave will not be granted retroactively for past semesters, or for the first term of a basic course of study.
Master's programme: For the first semester of study, an academic leave can only be granted during a study programme-related stay abroad.
Please note: If you change your combination of degree programmes after your academic leave has been granted, the academic leave will be cancelled. Any outstanding (partial) payments of the semester fee must be settled immediately without being asked. Failure to pay may result in exmatriculation by operation of law. It is possible to submit a new application within the application period.
