TRANS-AIR - Transformation Pathways for Meeting Energy Carrier Demands in the German Aviation Sector

The collaborative research project addresses the key challenge of achieving a sustainable transformation of the German aviation sector in the context of the energy transition. Its objective is to develop a systems-based study that designs technologically informed scenarios for the future supply of energy carriers and analyzes their impact on the required infrastructure. In light of the ambitions of the national energy transition, the project develops long-term transformation pathways to enable more climate-friendly aviation and derives, on this basis, policy recommendations for decision-makers in politics and industry.

As part of the collaborative project, the IFF’s Operations Research Working Group is developing a key work package that focuses on scenario-based assessments of future supply structures for hydrogen and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in the aviation sector. To this end, the group is developing a mixed-integer optimization model to determine the future supply costs of alternative energy sources at airports. The model considers annual trends, various transportation options, the European Hydrogen Backbone, and potential locations for liquefaction plants. Based on these factors, the model determines cost-optimal transport routes, modes of transport, and infrastructure decisions. Particular emphasis is placed on developing high-performance solution methods. The resulting supply costs at the airports under consideration will provide a solid foundation for further analyses within the overall project.
