Objective of the Research Project
Nowadays, the calculation of the excess sludge production in wastewater treatment is mainly based upon COD (chemical oxygen demand) and TSS (total suspended solids) concentration in the wastewater. The objective of the research project is, to improve this empirical approach by determining the influence of the average oxidation degree of the substrates. Thus it will be possible to adapt the determination of excess sludge production to varying conditions. Another goal of the investigations is to determine the activity of activated sludges grown with various substrates, in order to characterize the correlation between the activity of the individual wastewater treatment processes and the resulting excess sludge production. This is especially significant, for example, for post-denitrification and the selection of suitable carbon and energy sources. Here it is of special interest to achieve a maximum biological activity at a minimum excess sludge production.
