Course Objective

The students have basic knowledge in the continuum mechanical aspects of bodies such as liquids. They are familiar with selected special cases and their model equations and are able to derive these equations.

Course Content

This course introduces fundamental aspects of fluid mechanics. After familiarizing with the basic concepts, i.e. fluid properties and kinematics of fluid motion, stream filament theory with its basic equations will be covered for both incompressible flows and compressible flows. Furthermore multidimensional integral momentum equations will be introduced and applications of the momentum equation will be presented. Finally viscous incompressible 2D flows will be discussed which includes the basic equations, i.e. Navier-Stokes equation, as well as boundary layers theory, including laminar and turbulent 2D boundary layers. Finally incompressible inviscid 2D flows will be studied with the equation of motion, potential and stream function. Experimental and numerical demonstrations of various flows are included in this unit.
