Prof Surzhykov's working group fulfils a bridging function between the Technical University of Braunschweig and the PTB. At PTB, the group forms the "Fundamental Physics for Metrology" institute, whose aim is to further develop the quantum theory of atomic and mesoscopic systems. The institute's activities range from the high-precision analysis of atomic structures and collisions to the investigation of coherent processes in ultracold quantum gases and the modelling of phase transitions in magnetic systems. The common goal of these research activities is to support the development of new metrology standards, the precise determination of natural constants and the formulation of tests of fundamental symmetries of nature.
