CLEO Europe 2025

Besuch CLEO Europe
Deepanshu Yadav, Souvaraj De und Prof. Dr. Thomas Schneider

From 23.06. - 27.06.2025 some of us went to Munich to attend the CLEO Europe 2025 conference.

There we informed about current research activities with posters on the topics:

  • „Time-Domain Jacobi-Pulse-Sequence Transceiver“
  • „3D Printing for Enhanced On-chip Stimulated Brillouin Scattering“
  • „Orthogonal sampling with a single photodiode“

Vortrag Younus Mandalawi
Vortrag Younus Mandalawi

Defence Younus Mandalawi

On June 23, 2025, our colleague Younus Mandalawi successfully defended his doctoral thesis on Orthogonal Sampling Based High-Speed Transceiver Systems.

Examination Board:

Chairman - Prof. Dr.-Ing. Vadim Issakov, TU BS

First examiner - Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Thomas Schneider, TU BS

Second examiner - Prof. Periklis Petropoulos, University of Southampton

The subject of his thesis is a new kind of signal processing, investigated by the THz Photonics group of the TU-Braunschweig over the last few years, and called Orthogonal Sampling. This kind of sampling uses sinc-shaped Nyquist pulses for a theoretically error-free sampling of high-bandwidth signals. His doctoral thesis was part of the DFG research group Metrology for THz Communication (METERACOM).

June 23 Guest lecture Prof. Periklis Petropoulos

We are pleased to welcome Prof. Periklis Petropoulos from the University of Southampton to TU Braunschweig and cordially invite all those interested to his guest lecture on Optical Technologies for Nonlinear Signal Processing.

  • June 23
  • 2 pm
  • Room PK 4.117 1st floor Altgebäude / Pockelsstrasse 4

Announcement and interesting facts about Prof. Periklis Petropoulos

Naturalization Souvaraj - Congratulations -

Einbürgerung Souvarj De
Deepanshu Yadav, Souvaraj De, Dr. Khaleda Mallick, Prof. Dr. Thomas Schneider und Dr.-Ing. Janosch Meier

On 12.02.25, the time had come for our colleague Souvaraj De to be made a naturalized citizen in the large Dornse of Braunschweig's Old Town Hall.

He was accompanied at this special moment by Prof. Dr. Thomas Schneider and three other members of our working group.

Goodbye Dr. Xiaonan Yu

Dr. Xiaonan Yu from the Changchun University of Science & Technology in China has been working in our research group for a scientific exchange since 17.11.2023. During his stay at our institute, he worked on the investigation of photonically assisted methods for signal processing and of methods for their integration on a silicon photonics platform. After a good year, his research stay in Germany is now coming to an end, which is why it was time to say goodbye at a joint dinner on 12.11.2024.

Abschied Dr. Xiaonan

Vortrag Janosch Meier am 21.06.24.
Vortrag Janosch Meier am 21.06.24.

Defence Janosch Meier

On 21.06.24, our colleague Janosch Meier defended his doctoral thesis on Optical sampling with sinc sequences.

Examination Board:

Chairman - Prof. Dr.-Ing. Eduard A. Jorswieck, TU BS

First examiner - Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Thomas Schneider, TU BS

Second examiner - Einstein-Prof. Dr.-Ing. Friedel Gerfers, TU Berlin

In his doctoral thesis, Mr Meier is investigating how so-called sinc pulse sequences (SPS), i.e. periodic sine cardinalis (sinc) pulses, can be used to sample signals with as few errors as possible. SPS have been researched by the THz-Photonics Group at TU-Braunschweig for some time, as they can be used for many different applications from agnostic transceivers to digital-to-analogue conversion and the processing of broadband signals with narrowband electronics. Mr Meier's work focuses primarily on the mathematical background and interrelationships of the generation and application of SPS.

Verteidigung Sabahat Shaheen am 19.06.24.
Vortrag Sabahat Shaheen am 19.06.24.

Defence Sabahat Shaheen

On 19.06.24, our colleague Sabahat Shaheen defended her doctoral thesis on Distributed Acoustic Sensing using Geometric Phase and its application to Seismology.

Examination Board:

Chairman - Prof. Dr. Andrey Surzhykov, TU BS

First examiner - Prof. Dr rer. nat. Thomas Schneider, TU BS

Second examiner - Prof. Gilberto Brambilla, University of Southampton

The thesis of Ms. Shaheen is a cumulative one and based on journal and conference papers, one of which in the Nature journal Scientific Reports. The experimental work for the thesis has been carried out at the Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) in Berlin.

The subject of the thesis is a novel scheme for the distributed and dynamic sensing of strain along a fiber based on the geometric phase. In her publications Ms. Shaheen proposes to use this geometric phase for distributed and dynamic acoustic sensing for the first time.

Verteidigung Mohammed Ibrahim Hosni Elsayed am 29.05.24
Vortrag Mohammed Ibrahim Hosni Elsayed am 29.05.24

Defence Mohammed Ibrahim Hosni Elsayed

On 29.05.24, our colleague Mohammed Ibrahim Hosni Elsayed defended his doctoral thesis on Photonics-Assisted High Data Rate Communications.

Examination Board:

Chairman - Prof. Dr.-Ing. Thomas Kürner, TU BS

First examiner - Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Thomas Schneider, TU BS

Second examiner - Prof. Dr.-Ing. Maurizio Burla, TU Berlin

In his dissertation, Mr Elsayed is investigating new methods of photonics-based signal processing that can be used for the generation, detection and processing of high data rate and high bandwidth signals.
