Students on the Bachelor's degree programme in Mechanical Engineering work in teams of four to five people on topics from the field of aerospace engineering. Depending on the institute, tasks are assigned from the fields of aircraft construction and lightweight construction, materials, aerodynamics, engines, flight performance and control or flight guidance.
In the area of aircraft construction and lightweight construction, which is supervised by the IFL, students design individual aircraft components for defined load cases, carry out strength calculations using the finite element method and finally design and manufacture the aircraft component.
In addition to writing a scientific paper, the main aim of the course is to learn how to divide a task into meaningful work packages, correctly assess their scope and create a project plan that is as realistic as possible. The scope of the task is designed in such a way that solutions can be developed in parallel, but for some parts of the project the completion of previous work stages may be absolutely necessary.
The Institute of Flight Guidance (IFF) and the Institute of Materials (IfW) will take over the overall organisation of the aerospace engineering project work in the winter semester 2025 / 2026.
In the project work, aerospace issues are worked on by teams of four to five students. The project work runs throughout the semester.
General information on the content and schedule of the project work (in particular the compulsory dates) can be found under Aerospace Engineering Project Work WS 2025 / 2026 on StudIP. You can also register for the project work on StudIP (course title: Aerospace Engineering Project Work WS 2025 / 2026).
Various topics from the participating institutes are available for the aerospace engineering project work in the winter semester 2025/2026. As most topics can only be worked on by four students in a team, all students must register for three topics (first choice, second choice and third choice). The corresponding survey can be found on StudIP from 31 July 2025 in the <Evaluations> section.
The registration period (registration for the topic suggestions!) runs from 31 July 2025 to 30 September 2025, after which the registrations will be evaluated and an attempt will be made to take the students' wishes into account.
The general preliminary discussion will take place on 21 October 2025 at 13:30 in lecture hall HB35.1. If necessary, a non-presence event will be offered on the same date via video stream (more information on StudIP). Beforehand, there will be a meeting of the groups with the respective supervisors for students who will be working on IfW topics. The supervisors will contact you by e-mail.
