Fracture Mechanics

Fracture Mechanics is studying the behaviour of cracks and damages in materials. In general projects at the Institute of Aircraft Design and Lightweight Structures focus on composite materials or aluminum, varying in kind of structures, load cases and analysing methods (for example tests, numerical simulations or analytical approaches). The main task is to improve the understanding of crack driving forces and failure phenomena and therefore to ensure a secure mechanical performance of materials and structures.

BMWi LuFo-V Project IMeLa: Innovative methods for the load process

IMeLa is a part of the LuFo project ALEGRO and focuses on the improvement and gain in accuracy for the design- and load process. To achieve this, in one part fatigue and damage tolerance aspects in preliminary design are used by using in-service data. This results in a more realistic description of fatigue and damage tolerance loads for the detailed design process or for the determination of inspection intervals of specific aircraft configurations. In a second part the accuracy of the load process is increased by integrating high fidelity CFD-CSM methods. A focus lies in the supply of rapidly analysable load descriptions for the load process. Both parts contribute towards the realistic analysis and design of aircraft, for efficient design or for the expansion of existing models.

DFG-Collaborative Research Center Transregio 40 - sub-project D2: "Mechanical integrity of thermal barrier coatings on nozzle structures under thermo mechanical loads"

The SFB-TR40 focuses on technological foundations for the design of thermally and mechanically highly loaded components of future space transportation systems.

The aim of the sub-project D2 is to investigate failure mechanisms of thermal barrier coatings on combustion chambers of liquid rocket engines. Our collaboration partner for this project is the Institut für Werkstoffe of the TU Braunschweig. At our institute we follow a multi scale analysis approach in order to investigate these phenomena. A global FSI model of a typical thrust chamber is used to analyse the acting thermal and mechanical loads. For highly loaded positions resultant boundary conditions of the global model are transferred to a local FEM model, where possible delaminations are analysed by a fracture mechanics approach.

DFG-project: large testing device

This project is not dedicated to the investigation of a certain phenomenon in fracture mechanics. The goal of this DFG (German Research Foundation)-funded project is morelike the creation of a "universal" platform for the investigation of fracture mechanic phenomena. In cooperation with the Institut für Füge- und Schweißtechnik (Prof Dilger) of the TU Braunschweig and the German Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrttechnik (DLR, Prof. Wiedemann), this large scale testing device for fatigue-investigation of FRP-reinforced lightweight structures was designed and constructed at the IFL and is ready for testing. The project "buck-damage", financially supported by the German Research Foundation (DFG), focuses on the combination of cracks due to accidental damages and stability problems as buckling. Tests are realized within this project as well as numerical analyses.

The Institute of Aircraft Design and Lightweight Structures investigates the influence of defects (such as fibre waviness, distributed or accumulated voids, impacts, ...) on the damage mechanisms and fatigue behaviour of biaxially or sequently loaded composites.
