The goal of bioelectrochemistry is the targeted formation and utilization of biofilms on electrodes. The electrosynthesis of platform or fine chemicals at a cathode or the generation of electricity at an anode in a microbial fuel cell using bioelectrochemically active organisms such as Geobacter sulfurreducens represent cutting-edge technologies that are the focus of research at the ibvt. In addition, we are improving the rate-limiting electron transfer to and from the electrode and conducting comprehensive investigations into the production and application of (modified) biopolymers, as well as their electrochemical and mechanical properties, across the entire value chain, with the goal of developing functionalized materials for sustainable energy storage systems.
