Bioprocesses are multiphase reaction systems and are typically characterized by a high degree of heterogeneity within the systems due to the presence of interfaces and potential interactions. Through our research, we aim to understand the underlying molecular phenomena of heterogeneous bioprocesses so that we can use this understanding to develop new process strategies and products. To ensure a rational approach, we combine (bio)process engineering tools—such as modeling and systems bioprocess engineering—with scientific tools, such as technical biochemistry and molecular microbiology. This interdisciplinary approach taken by the institute within the fields of engineering and life sciences allows us to gain deeper insight and develop a fundamental understanding of the future challenges in bioprocess engineering.
