Overview of the lectures offered at ibvt

Bioprozesskinetik

Learning Objectives

Students can describe biokinetic and enzymatic reactions, chemical transformations, and product formation, and apply this knowledge to various problems so that they can develop different solutions using enzymatic processes while taking into account various physical and chemical constraints.

Bioreaktoren und Bioprozesse

Learning Objectives

Students can identify and describe the various processes in bioprocess engineering. They are able to perform calculations for the design and upscaling of bioreactors. They compare different reactor systems using mass and energy balances and, based on this, can select and calculate the required process parameters. Students are also able to apply the theoretical knowledge they have acquired to real-world reactors. Students can evaluate the suitability of various process parameters for a defined problem. Students can derive the analogy between mass, momentum, and heat transfer.

Chemische Reaktionskinetik

Learning Objectives

Students are able to work with and apply micro- and macrokinetics. They are also able to apply the knowledge they have acquired about heterogeneous catalytic processes to practical applications. Students also understand basic concepts of reaction engineering, as well as the principles of the thermodynamics of chemical reactions, the microkinetics of homogeneous gas and liquid reactions, and the macrokinetics of gas/solid and fluid/fluid reactions.

Industrielle Bioverfahrenstechnik

Learning Objectives

By the end of the semester, students will be able to identify key decision-making steps in industrial bioprocess engineering and explain them using process examples. Specifically, they will be able to…
… propose suitable raw materials and identify the necessary requirements for strain and reactor selection,
… identify classical and modern strategies for strain development, define them, propose suitable methods, and evaluate their impact on bioprocess control,
… identify process engineering methods for reactor and strain characterization, evaluate them for a given problem, and select a suitable method,
… define and apply criteria for the scale-up of bioreactors, and justify the selection of a scale-up criterion,
… identify methods for process optimization, as well as develop and analyze simple statistical experimental designs,
… identify and apply methods for cost estimation and investment calculations,
… and identify key methods of project management in plant engineering.
… identify key elements of protection strategies and conduct simple patent and market studies.

Kultivierungs- und Aufarbeitungsprozesse

Learning Objectives

Students are able to describe, analyze, and evaluate biotechnological production processes. This includes the upstream process, the actual production, and the downstream process. They are able to select proposed solutions for a given problem and, in some cases, develop their own solutions.
Through practical examples and experimental work, students are able to independently carry out and calculate cultivation and processing techniques and confidently apply the relevant principles.

Mikrobiologie für Ingenieure

Learning Objectives

Students can describe the structure of prokaryotes and eukaryotes and explain the functions of cellular components; they can explain the growth behavior of microorganisms and apply the mathematical principles used to describe that behavior. In addition, they understand the importance of microorganisms to industry and can describe biological processes.

Nachhaltige Bioproduktion

This course teaches students how to develop sustainable concepts for the bio-based production of chemicals, materials, fuels, and energy from renewable raw materials. In addition, biotechnological processes are evaluated using eco-efficiency analysis. To this end, the course provides an overview of industrially relevant feedstocks, integrated biorefinery concepts, and relevant products, enabling students to design and engineer sustainable production processes.

Pharmaverfahrenstechnik/Grundlagen der Arzneiformenlehre
Weiße Biotechnologie

In the course “White Biotechnology” (a synonym for industrial biotechnology), students gain in-depth theoretical knowledge about the use of biological—and, in particular, microbial—systems for the production of economically valuable biochemicals and fine chemicals. This includes, for example, knowledge of the biosynthesis of interesting products of primary and secondary metabolism or of fermentation products, as well as the modification of natural regulatory mechanisms to increase the production of intermediates or end products using methods from molecular biology and bioprocess engineering.

Overview of the lab courses offered at ibvt

Angewandte Mikrobiologie I bzw. II

In the “Applied Microbiology” lab, students cultivate Aspergillus niger, a mold widely used in industry. The lab covers topics such as process kinetics, mass balance, and morphological analysis using microscopy and image analysis.

Bioprozesskinetik

The “Bioprocess Kinetics” laboratory course teaches students about biochemical reaction mechanisms through selected laboratory experiments. The goal is to enable students to plan enzyme-catalyzed reaction processes, use enzymes correctly, and describe the process sequences mathematically.

Bioreaktoren und Bioprozesse

The “Bioreactors and Bioprocesses” lab course teaches the practical fundamentals of bioprocess engineering through several sub-experiments.

Sub-experiment 1: Cultivation of Escherichia coli in a stirred tank

Advisors: Anna Dinius & Kevin Viebrock

Sub-experiment 2: Fluid dynamics in a stirred tank

Advisor: Sarah Brune

Sub-experiment 3: Airlift loop reactor

Advisor: Jonathan Block

Sub-experiment 4: Residence time behavior of chemical reactors

Advisor: Dr.-Ing. Katrin Dohnt

Interdisciplinary research module "From gene to product"
Kultivierungs- und Aufarbeitungsprozesse; Teil Bioverfahrenstechnik

During the internship, students learn how to plan and carry out a cultivation process in a stirred tank on their own.

Mikrobiologie für Ingenieure

Students acquire knowledge and methodological skills for the systematic analysis of microbiological processes. They are equipped to tackle problems with the necessary breadth of expertise and to successfully address specific practical issues in bioprocess engineering.

Pharmabioverfahrenstechnik

The “Pharmaceutical Bioprocess Engineering” lab demonstrates the chromatographic purification of a protein. The goal is to investigate how the column material and buffer properties affect separation efficiency.

Pharmaverfahrenstechnik

In the “Pharmaceutical Process Engineering” lab, students move through various stations designed to familiarize them with the requirements of drug manufacturing processes.
