Cryogenic agents - Properties and handling

This experiment focuses on the handling and properties of cryogenic liquids and is divided into two parts, each of which is scheduled to take one day.

In the first part, the effects of liquid nitrogen on different materials are investigated and the temperature dependence of the resistance of three different solids is measured. In addition, the evaporation enthalpy of liquid nitrogen is determined.

In the second part of the experiment, the properties of liquid helium are investigated in a glass cryostat. In addition to handling the cryostat, the lambda point is determined when measuring the vapour pressure curve and the superfluid phase of helium is observed using the Onnes effect.

STM/AFM

Scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) are two essential instruments in the field of nanotechnology, achieving a resolution of a few pm and thus enabling the imaging of individual molecules and even atoms. This is made possible by the quantum mechanical tunnelling effect in STM and the Coulomb and Pauli repulsion in AFM. Since STM and AFM operate in real space, the surface properties of a sample, such as topography, electronic state density, surface states and magnetisation, can be examined spatially with atomic resolution. This experiment focuses on the basic functionality, calibration of the devices and surface properties of various materials.
