Car park management at TU Braunschweig

Car park management

The parking situation at Technische Universität Braunschweig has deteriorated significantly in recent years. Utilisation analyses now show a considerable level of external and long-term occupation of the university’s own parking spaces – in some cases reaching up to 70 per cent.

At the same time, the City of Braunschweig has expanded parking management in the Oker flood bypass area and introduced paid, time-limited parking zones on public land on the central campus. High parking fees in many urban areas have increased the incentive to switch to TU car parks that were previously free to use. The result: university members have to search for a parking space for a long time, accept long walks, or cannot find a space at all.

Against this backdrop, the TU is introducing a new parking scheme that ensures priority access to the university’s own parking spaces and sustainably reduces parking pressure. The aim is to enable university members to use the available parking spaces reliably and with certainty, whilst at the same time preventing them from having to resort to paid municipal parking zones.

Procedure and registration

At the heart of the new system is a digital registration process via the TU Online Portal. Students and staff create a personal account there using their TU email adress (@tu-braunschweig.de), enter their vehicle registration number, and can then choose between a day pass or a monthly pass.

The daily ticket costs €3.50, the monthly ticket €10. Booking, payment, renewal and vehicle management are handled entirely digitally.

To the pricing structure

Multiple vehicles can be registered per account. However, only one of these vehicles may be parked in TU car parks at any one time. The parking authorisation applies to all TU car parks without any zonal restrictions; switching between different car parks is also possible several times a day. Long-term parking of vehicles is not permitted, however - use is intended exclusively for study and work purposes.

Technical details

Technically, the concept is based on camera-based number plate recognition. High-resolution cameras installed at the entrances to the car parks capture a vehicle’s number plate as it enters and exits. Using OCR (Optical Character Recognition) technology, this is automatically cross-referenced with the central ticket database.

If a valid parking permit is present, only a timestamp and location are stored. If there is no registration or if there is a breach of the terms of use, a corresponding violation record is automatically generated. In this way, compliance with the regulations can be monitored efficiently and with minimal staff involvement.

An overview of all parking areas

Registration for parking management and ticket sales are handled via software provided by dipano GmbH. This software is hosted externally on behalf of TU Braunschweig. As part of the software’s operation, auto-reply emails are sent via the server address parkschein(at)book-and-park.de.

Data protection

Data protection is our top priority. All data is processed in a pseudonymised and encrypted form. No movement profiles are created. Provided there are no breaches, the data collected is deleted immediately after the parking process is completed. Retention periods are strictly in accordance with legal requirements.

Outlook

With the new parking scheme, the TU is laying the foundations for a fair, cost-effective and sustainable use of parking spaces – ensuring that members of the university community can once again reliably find a parking space.

The new system will be introduced in stages. A pilot phase is planned for central campus areas from April 2026. An information campaign will be launched to provide details on registration, usage and data protection aspects. Following successful implementation on the central campus, the plan is to extend the system to the entire campus network.

News

The cameras have already been installed. Trial operations will begin on the main campus in April. From this point onwards, it will also be possible to create a user account on the online portal and register your vehicle.

Details on registration for university members and information on guest management will follow shortly.
