Within the framework of the exchange program with the University of Rhode Island (URI), students of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering have the opportunity to obtain a U.S. degree as Master of Science (M.Sc.) or Master of Business Administration (MBA) in addition to the German Master's degree. This Master's programme takes three US semesters/terms (12 months in total).

University and Programme
The University of Rhode Island is located in the USA near Kingston, 180 miles north-east from New York. URI was founded in 1888, has about 17.000 students and is the leading university in the state of Rhode Island. In 1995 an agreement on academic cooperation was signed between URI and TU BS. Since 1997, URI and the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of TU Braunschweig are offering a double degree programme primarily for the study programmes Mechanical Engineering, Biochemical and Chemical Engineering and Industrial and Mechanical Engineering.

The programme thrives on mutual student exchange. Through the International Engineering Program (IEP) or the Dual Degree Program (DD), URI students come to Braunschweig. Programme participants at TU Braunschweig who spend semesters abroad at URI assume the costs for the language courses in Braunschweig from these incoming students. In return, students of TU Braunschweig are granted free places at URI, thus waiving the tuition fees.

Other financing options such as 'Auslands-BaföG', Fulbright and DAAD scholarships can be combined.

Offer for students of TU Braunschweig

Dual Degree (DD)

Possible degrees at the University of Rhode Island (URI):

  • M.Sc. Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics
  • M.Sc. Industrial and Systems Engineering
  • M.Sc. Chemical Engineering

Duration of stay: 2 semesters (3 terms)

Start of stay: 1st / 3rd master semester

As a rule, you take a total of 24 ch (credit hours) during your year abroad at URI. You will take 5 courses of 3 ch each and write a Master's thesis of 9 ch. To achieve the M.Sc. at URI, 30 ch are required, the remaining 6 ch are two master courses, which are taken at TU Braunschweig and are imported to URI. Typically, the 5 courses taken at URI are recognized after an equivalence test for 5 courses at TU Braunschweig. Likewise, the Master's thesis written there (in agreement with a supervising institute at TU Braunschweig) is also submitted to TU Braunschweig as a Student's Research Project or Master's thesis. In total, 49 to 55 ECTS are collected at URI.
The remaining 65-71 ECTS have to be earned before or after at TU Braunschweig in order to obtain the corresponding degree in Braunschweig. Your studies will normally not be extended. You will therefore receive two full degrees from two different universities within the standard period of study of one degree.
The regular fees for participation are about 1.800 € (costs for the language courses, 1 ch in summer term).

Non-degree

Beginning of stay: at the Fall or Spring term at the URI in the 1st or 3rd semester

You study either in the Fall or Spring term for one semester at URI. Typically you will attend 3 courses there, which will be recognised by TU Braunschweig if they are equivalent.
The regular fees for participation are about 750 € (costs for the language courses).

Separate additional degree / Master of Business Administration

Possible degree at the URI:
Master of Business Administration in Strategic Innovation (MBA)

Duration of stay: 2 semesters (3 terms)

Start of the stay: 1st or 3rd master semester

You study the regular MBA at the URI. The MBA is a generalist management programme with a strong practical focus and a prescribed curriculum. Recognition of academic achievements at TU Braunschweig is possible in principle, but is much more difficult due to the smaller overlaps. The Master's thesis to obtain the TU BS degree must be written in Braunschweig. Normally, this leads to a one-semester extension of studies at the TU BS. The regular fees for participation are around 1.800 € (costs for the language courses, 1 ch in the summer term). In addition (despite free places) there are additional costs of about 8.000 USD.
