Fundamentals of Nanotechnology

Course content

Intended learning outcome:

After completing the module, the students will have a basic knowledge of nanotechnology. The participants are able to define the types and characteristics of nanomaterials, the basics of manufacturing process of nanomaterials, and name their most important applications. In addition, they are able to explain current developments of nanotechnology and trends for future progress, as well as economic aspects of nanomaterials. The students can describe the characteristics of nanotechnology, the application of nanomaterials, and the potential risks as well as its manifold possibilities.

Module content:

  • Definition of nanotechnology
  • Milestones of nanotechnology
  • Basics regarding nanomaterials and their manufacturing (liquid phase synthesis, sol-gel technology, gas-phase synthesis)
  • The “wondermaterials” of nanotechnology
  • Properties and processing of nanomaterials
  • Applications of nanomaterials (functional thin films, nanocomposites and hybrid materials)
  • The generations of nanotechnology
  • Economic success with nanomaterials (innovations, funding, corporate venture)
