ChemBSc-15 a Advanced Inorganic Chemistry (Lab Course)

Course content

Intended learning outcomes:
The students master advanced experimental techniques used in inorganic chemistry. They apply advanced expertise on selected topics in the field of inorganic chemistry in order to design, execute, evaluate and document complex experiments. The students possess comprehensive skills and abilities in the synthesis, isolation and purification of inorganic and organometallic compounds as well as in the characterisation thereof with various techniques. By being involved in current scientific questions, the students are acquainted with university research and scientific practice and are proficient in the use of scientific databases. The students are able to acquire independently expertise in specific topics of inorganic chemistry and to present and discuss those competently. They are capable of documenting and reflecting on their learning process as well as their acquired competences.

Course Content:
Practical execution of multi-step syntheses applying advanced experimental techniques common in the field of inorganic chemistry (inert atmosphere techniques, exclusion of air and moisture, sublimation, recrystallisation, distillation, chromatography), application of spectroscopic and spectrometric techniques (NMR, IR and UV/VIS spectroscopy; mass spectrometry; X-ray powder diffraction; elemental analysis; magneto chemistry) as well as scientific documentation.
