Basics of Aircraft Propulsion

Course content

After successfully completing the module, students will be able to establish basic qualitative and quantitative requirements for aircraft engines. Basic definitions and factors influencing the main efficiencies of aircraft engines and strategies for optimisation are known. Concepts for thrust generation and the generation of shaft power can be evaluated with regard to their specific advantages and disadvantages. This means that students also have the methods for analysing new types of propulsion concepts and can apply them. Using jet engines and propellers as a reference, students will have knowledge of the thermodynamic and aerodynamic aspects of propulsion concepts and will be able to assess their specific advantages and disadvantages. Students know the thermodynamic variables and their progression along the engine and can assess new cyclic processes.
