Synthetic power test field

The synthetic power test field is available in the elenia for investigations on circuit breakers.

The synthetic power test field comprises a high current and a high voltage test circuit, which are used in combination or individually. The high-current circuit generates a 10 ms half-wave and the high-voltage circuit generates a transient recovery voltage. Here test objects can be loaded with up to 63 kA (RMS) and 140 kV (TRV). The relevant measurement data such as current, voltage and contact distance are recorded by a transient recorder.

The tested specimens are circuit breakers in a removable vacuum vessel. This custom-made product enables the optical and thermographic examination of the switching contacts used.

Schematic diagram of the laboratory

The illustrated principle circuit diagram of the laboratory shows all important generation and measuring devices. During the tests, the switch is loaded with a 10 ms current half-wave by the switch on. At zero current, there is also a load from the transient recovery voltage.

High current capacitor bank (1)

A capacitor bank with coordinated coil packages is available to generate a 10 ms half-wave.

Key figures for high current generation:

  • Max. Charging voltage 3 kV
  • Max. Current peak value 89 kA
  • 168 oil-insulated wound capacitors
High voltage capacitor bank (2)

For investigations of dielectric strengths, it is possible to generate a transient recovery voltage.

Key figures of high voltage generation:

  • Max. Charging voltage 100 kV
  • Max. Voltage peak value 140 kV
  • Settling frequency up to 1 kHz
Switch under test (3)

This detachable one-off production enables the contacts to be viewed from three perspectives in order to observe switch-off attempts.

Properties of the test switch:

Pressure 1 · 10-6 mbar
Contact stroke variable from 10 - 15 mm
Opening speed 1.6 m / s (at 12 mm)

Current and voltage measurement (4)

A current shunt and a high-voltage probe are available for measuring the current and voltage (PDF).
