Sustainably protecting the environment

The daily news show the need for environmental engineers in the labour market very clearly. Climate change, endangered nuclear waste repositories, disturbed ecosystems and raw material shortages are just a few examples. In the future, humanity will have to deal with other problems such as the growing needs caused by the increasing world population and the accompanying increase in energy and resource consumption. The solutions to these problems must be sustainable and should protect and preserve our world.

In the Master's degree programme in Environmental Engineering, you will acquire all the necessary knowledge to develop scientifically and technically sound solutions for efficient and sustainable resource management and to be able to plan, realise and operate the necessary infrastructure buildings and facilities. In doing so, you will use the methods and tools of engineering sciences.

Individual specialisation

The Master's programme offers a scientific focus. You choose four subjects from the following basic areas:

• Ecology and Conversation
• Air Quality and Pollution Control
• Pollutants in the Environment
• Fundamentals of Finite Element Methods
• Environmental Law and Approval Proceedings

Furthermore, in-depth knowledge is taught in selected subjects of environmental engineering with a scientific focus; here you can choose three specialisations:

• Soil protection and geotechnics
• Energy technology
• Environmental Sustainability and Life Cycle Engineering
• Local public transport
• Environmental and resource-friendly construction
• Environmental Monitoring
• Sanitary and Environmental Engineering
• Transport and Infrastructure
• Water Management
• of your own choice (application to the examination board)

Study abroad? No problem! Thanks to the numerous international exchange programmes at the TU Braunschweig, you can easily integrate semesters abroad into your studies: Your achievements from abroad will be discussed in advance and can subsequently be recognised. Many of our students already gain international experience during their studies.

Dual degree programme in the USA

Our double degree programme for Master's students with the University of Rhode Island (USA) offers you a special bonus: You spend the last year of your studies there and simultaneously acquire the Master of Science degree from the TU Braunschweig and the University of Rhode Island.

Excursions  at home and abroad are offered in a variety of ways. What they have in common is that they take you off the beaten track and you bring home unusual, enriching impressions. You can also gain insights into which views and topics are current elsewhere through guest lectures by domestic and foreign capacities.

To get off to a good start in engineering studies, your inclination towards mathematical and scientific subjects is important: you should have a basic interest in these subjects, especially Mathematics and Physics play a decisive role. Biology and chemistry are not quite as important - however, there are special fields in which environmental engineers deal intensively with the combination of Environmental Engineering and Biology or Chemistry, for example in the field of environmental protection.

Another important "tool of the trade" is the confident use of computers. Environmental engineers do not usually do their own programming - but here too there are specialists in the use of EDP in Environmental Engineering.

On the subject of languages: Knowledge of foreign languages is important, as you can expect many job opportunities abroad. Here our language centre offers you good opportunities to expand or brush up your language skills!

Since environmental engineers work with many different people in their future careers, communication and teamwork skills are required - but don't worry, you will train these skills during your studies at TU Braunschweig.

As an environmental engineer, you can work in various fields of work, for example:

• Development, planning, implementation of environmentally friendly technologies in the planning, realisation and operation of building facilities
• Avoiding and minimising environmental pollution
• Minimising the consumption of raw materials and energy
• Recovering materials from waste or generating energy from waste
• Sustainable supply of energy and water
• Participation in the development of environmentally sound strategies
• Detection, prevention and elimination of environmental damage.
