The Chemistry degree programme at TU Braunschweig offers training in all areas of chemistry to make sure you acquire a comprehensive theoretical and practical knowledge.

Internationally recognised research programme

At TU Braunschweig you will study in an excellently equipped Chemistry Centre. A diverse and internationally recognised research programme awaits you, ranging from research into naturally occurring substances and drugs, catalysis, synthesis methods, nanotechnology and laser chemistry to polymer chemistry. The focus is on chemistry in the life sciences and the chemistry of energy conversion.

The region is also home to a large number of internationally renowned research institutions with which the University’s chemistry institutes cooperate closely, such as the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI), the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) and other research facilities.

Information on the study programme

From the very first semester, you will work on practical tasks in the laboratory and learn how to handle chemicals and equipment responsibly. Courses attended in parallel provide the theoretical background. You will get to know all facets of chemistry, from the basics of inorganic, organic and physical chemistry to applications in industrial chemistry.

In addition to these subjects, the curriculum also includes courses not related to the natural sciences as well as courses on key skills such as foreign languages or presentation techniques. You complete your studies with a Bachelor’s thesis on a topic chosen from the fields of inorganic, organic, physical or technical chemistry.

Semester abroad

You can benefit from our international contacts if you want to study abroad for a semester. In addition to established Erasmus placements in France, the United Kingdom or Sweden, new contacts can also be established with the support of our International House. In addition, several students study at the University of Utah in the USA every year. Your academic achievements from there will be recognised at TU Braunschweig.

If you enjoyed scientific and mathematical subjects at school, you have a sound basis. With chemistry as an advanced course in school, it will be easier for you to start your studies, but it is not a prerequisite.

Chemistry is a subject in which you can develop not only “scientific curiosity” but also manual dexterity. Imagination and the ability to abstract will help you to visualise and think in models and to logically and creatively link experimental observations with chemical, physical and biological facts.

Knowledge of English is important already in the Bachelor’s degree programme, as most of the international specialised literature is published in English and it is spoken at international conferences; moreover, large parts of the chemical industry operate internationally. You can perfect your language skills by taking courses at the TU Language Centre.
