The IT Security Awareness Days are jointly organized by several German universities and will take place for the eighth time from 04 November - 15 November 2024 (week 45-56).

The IT-SAD are a series of online events with lectures on information security. The lectures are organized by the participating universities. The lecture topics range from “Security in the home office” to “Social engineering” and are mostly aimed at users with no prior knowledge. However, there are also more technical presentations.

Information security for the use at home - tips & tricks for home network security.	Nowadays, many services should “just work”, and for home network devices this often means “plug and play”. However, it often helps to take a closer look at the technology in order to minimize security risks and improve overall performance. Be it setting up 2FA, Wi-Fi passwords, guest networks, or usage restrictions, many home network devices provide significantly more options than those that are used by default. In this presentation, some hints, tips and tricks for improving security in the home network will be presented.
Information security for the home office	The coronavirus pandemic meant that, at very short notice, many employees had to work from home. The most important thing was to be able to work at all. However this had a negative impact on IT security, since it was'nt the priority at that point. This is where the presentation “IT security in the home office” is set. It shows what employers need to bear in mind and how employees can also contribute to security. What should normally be clarified before working from home? What safety precautions need to be taken? How can data protection be guaranteed on the way between the office and the home office? How can data protection be guaranteed at the home office? What is the best way to organize yourself when working from home?
Protecting privacy online - the best of browser extensions	The presentation on “safe surfing” from a privacy perspective will focus on the following questions: How can I surf “safely” so that as little data as possible about me and my surfing behavior flows out? What can I do to surf in a reasonably comfortable way without being disturbed by cookie warnings? And just as a side issue (as this is not primarily a privacy issue, but more about measures to calm my own nerves): How can I effectively block advertising on websites In addition, some frequently used browser extensions (add-ons) are presented, which are helpful in deleting cookies, support the blocking of advertising or protect against third-party providers secretly analyzing in the background.
Its a trap! Hackers, thieves, social engineers	Social engineering - a buzzword for a very old phenomenon, which many people may not know or understand what it means. It is actually just the good (or bad, given the goals), old art of persuasion and inducement to take actions that are harmful to oneself - but now employing more modern methods and means. To be able to protect yourself from such traps, it is important to be aware of the methods criminals use today and to have an orientation on how to recognize such attempted attacks. The lecture is intended to raise awareness of the problem, highlight the range of attack methods and illustrate them with examples.
Messenger - data protection and information security	WhatsApp, Signal, Telegram, Threema and other messenger services are used by billions of users. The quick and convenient exchange of messages, images, videos and files and the fact that communication partners are usually easy to reach mean that nobody wants to go without such services. For skeptics, there is the added pressure of having to participate in order not to be left behind. The popularity of messengers is offset by questions about data protection and information security. The discussions are sometimes heated, with many opinions not always contributing to greater clarity. The presentation is intended to address both positive and negative aspects of data protection and information security and thus help to better assess risks and opportunities and to use messengers appropriately (or even to refrain from using them).
APT from the attacker's perspective	he presentation “APT from the attacker's perspective” shows the motivation and methods why and how attackers try to take over computer systems for their own purposes. Not only large companies or government networks are affected, but also individual users are targeted - whether intentionally or as collateral damage. By presenting the attacker's perspective, we want to motivate people to question and optimize their own security measures.
Cybersecurity Escape Room	Playfully learn the most important basics of IT security in an escape game. Immerse yourself in the role of an attacker and gain access to internal company documents. No prior knowledge is required for this event. As capacities are limited, registration is required for this event. Please send an informal e-mail with your name to ecsm@uos.de
WLAN security	With our cell phones, tablets and laptops, we are almost always ‘online’ these days. If the device is activated somewhere, a Wi-Fi connection can be established almost anywhere and data can be sent out into the world. How to ensure that data is secure even without a protective cable as a transport medium will be examined here. A particular focus is on the aspects on what can go wrong? and how you can you protect yourself.
