The audit beruf und familie® developed on the initiative of and on behalf of the nonprofit Hertie Foundation is a tool used to promote family-conscious personnel policy. The certificates for the audit berufundfamilie® have first been granted to private-sector enterprises and nonprofit organizations. Since 2001, universities can also earn these certificates, under the title audit familiengerechte hochschule® (Family-Friendly Higher Education Audit). Since 2004, the audit familiengerechte hochschule has been under the patronage of the Federal Minister for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth and the Federal Minister of Economics and Technology.

The decision to conduct the audit familiengerechte hochschule at TU Braunschweig

It is a central concern of TU Braunschweig by means of a family friendly personnel policy and university structure to ensure that members of the faculty and staff are better able to balance their jobs and academic pursuits with family needs and that students with children can balance their studies and home life. In the year of 2007, TU Braunschweig developed its concept of family-conscious higher education policy. As a result, TU Braunschweig received the basic "familiengerechte Hochschule" (Family-Friendly Higher Education) certificate. The university was re-certified for the fourth time in 2016 and for the following three years.
