Programming exercises: Comment lines and variables in the source code have to be written in English. While developing software, basics of software engineering, e.g. high cohesion and weak coupling of the partial components is important. In cooperation with other or further cooperation of existing sources, suitable systems for the version control (e.g. CVS) should be used. The result is to be presented in the thesis or handed in as appendix:

• the well commented programming-source;
• " flow diagrams or similar graphic summaries, overview of modules, variables etc.;
• typical results of work during test of the program, possibly statistic evaluation;
• in addition, all documents should be handed over electronically (see in the following).

Text system: A thesis written with TEX looks nice but, the printing quality of your work is not to be graded. If possible, an electronic version of the thesis should be available (preferred as PDF or Postscript or HTML). We provide an latex framework for writing the thesis. All sources have to be put under version control (with CVS). Therefor we provide an CVS repository.

In the beginning, please inform Professor Matthies about the title, your name, address, phone number and e-mail address.

Diploma/Master thesis: Please take care that we announce it (not too early). After announcement you have six months time to finish the thesis. Prolongations are only accepted exceptionally by the examination board.

Organization and hand-over of the work

• Document and program sources have to be put under version control (e.g. CVS). The institute provides a CVS repository for this purpose.
• sum up the thesis and all important documents (descriptions, simulation results, programming sources etc.) in an useful and easily to understand directories structure.
• Create a ReadMeFirst file inside the first directory level:
  • your name, date, title and short summary of your thesis;
  • table of contents

At the beginning of the thesis, the topis has to be presented in a short talk to inform Prof. Matthies and the members of the institute. After handing over the written thesis it is to be presented in a short talk with a following discussion.

Keep in regular contact with your supervisor. If someone does not appear for some time and does not reply in several requests without good reason we assume that he is no longer interested in the thesis and the title will be given to another person.

There are no sufficient rules for writing and marking a good thesis. (Otherwise, it would be possible to generate a thesis with a programme and to grade with expert's systems automatically.) Moreover, at the beginning of a thesis many marking criterions are inhibiting than supporting.

Auch ist die Gesamtheit aller Themen zu Studien- und Diplomarbeiten derart unterschiedlich und vielfältig, dass nicht für jede Arbeit alle Kriterien Anwendung finden. Nehmen Sie diese Kriterien daher gelassen zur Kenntnis, versuchen Sie nicht gewaltsam, sie zu erfüllen, aber verwenden Sie die Kriterien dennoch ernsthaft als Checkliste, worauf Sie möglicherweise noch achten könnten.

Diese Kriterien sind übrigens im wesentlichen von einem Erlanger Informatik-Institut übernommen. Zu Beginn jedes Kriteriums wird ein durchschnittlicher Standard ``definiert'', der durch ++, +, - und -- auf- oder abgewertet wird. Für Studien- und Diplomarbeiten werden diese Kriterien unterschiedlich stark berücksichtigt.

Standard: Die Arbeit kann von einem durchschnittlich begabten Studenten gelöst werden. Die Beurteilung des Schwierigkeitsgrades kann erst nach Abschluss der Arbeit endgültig erfolgen.

Auf- und Abwertung:

Standard: Der Bearbeiter benötigt ein normales Maß an Anleitung durch den Betreuer, greift aber auch aus eigenem Antrieb Schwierigkeiten auf und diskutiert sie mit dem Betreuer.

Auf- und Abwertung:

Standard: Die Aussagen, Algorithmen und Programme sind angemessen und weitgehend richtig.

Auf- und Abwertung:

Standard: Die sprachliche Ausdrucksfähigkeit zeigt sich insbesondere in der Klarheit und Kürze des Ausdrucks; auch schwierige Probleme werden verständlich dargelegt, triviale Zusammenhänge sind nicht hinter einem formalen Apparat verborgen.

Auf- und Abwertung:

Standard: Die äußere Form der Arbeit, insbesondere die der Zeichnungen und Tabellen, ist sorgfältig ausgeführt, die Gliederung und das Inhaltsverzeichnis sind klar.

Auf- und Abwertung:
