Roseobacter - global power in the oceans?

Collaborative Research Centres „Roseobacter“ enters the final round

They are the most frequent bacteria of the world: micro-organisms of the Roseobacter group. For several years, they are systematically analysed by a Collaborative Research Centre Transregio in Oldenburg and Braunschweig. Microbiologist Dieter Jahn from the Carolo-Wilhelmina is one of the scientists who elucidate its secret of success.

About eight years ago, little was known about the Roseobacter group. In all the oceans, they should be at home and have a pink color. This knowlege was not sufficient for Dieter Jahn and his colleagues. The bacteria that are scientifically grouped in this Roseobacter group, are the most common bacteria existing in the world, explains the microbiologist. "An organism that is so widespread, you should know better," says Jahn.
