OptoSense PhD Program

OptoSense PhD Program is the first PhD program of the IG-Nano after the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Laboratory of Emerging Nanometrology (LENA) at TU Braunschweig and Deputy for Engineering Sciences at Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) has been signed in August 2016. In this program, the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education of the Republic of Indonesia (RISTEKDIKTI) has provided funding at the IG-Nano with a total of 9 PhD-fellowships for study duration of 4 years under Research and Innovation in Science and Technology Project (RISET-Pro) starting from December 2016 to November 2020. In this regard, the RISTEKDIKTI will provide tuition fees, monthly stipend (i.e., for living, book, typing, settling, and research allowances), health insurance, return travel to Indonesia and international travel to complete their study in the OptoSense PhD program. This sponsorship is intended to support excellent junior Indonesian scientists from the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) and its collaborative universities to pursue their doctoral study at the LENA and its partners as well as to transfer the scientific knowledge between these two countries of Indonesia and Germany. This program is managed by Dr.-Ing. Hutomo Suryo Wasisto, who is the group leader of the Optoelectromechanical Integrated Nanosystems for Sensing (OptoSense) Group at the LENA.

The main aim of this OptoSense PhD-program is the education of graduates in the context of integrated nanosystems and nanoelectronics for ubiquitous nanosensors based on optical, electrical, and mechanical detection methods. This field has become one of the LENA core research areas (CRAs), which is CRA3: Ubiquitous Sensors and Standards. Moreover, to guarantee success of this PhD program, other world leading research groups (LENA external partners) with long experiences in the different fields of expertise are also involved.

The Indonesian scholars with different scientific backgrounds (i.e., physics, electrical engineering, optoelectronics, nanotechnology, material science, electronics, and informatics), who are selected in this program, are intended to become experts in the discipline of integrated nanosensors, being able to overcome the challenges of future scientific researches and markets. The PhD-students will be supported by the Institute of Semiconductor Technology (IHT) and the LENA at the TU Braunschweig in terms of the research project management and the working culture integration during their PhD works. Another essential aspect is the interdisciplinary work in teams at the participating institutes, which allows the PhD students to participate from the experience of international colleagues.

Research Project

The 9 PhD projects cover both fundamental and applied research projects, which are used to have basic understanding of the sensing mechanisms and characteristics of the developed sensors and to realize the miniaturized prototypes of the ubiquitous nanosensors and make their communications, respectively. These created sensors based on various sensing detections (i.e., optical, electrical, and mechanical mechanisms) and targets (e.g., blood cells, bacteria, human tissue, gas, nanoparticles, force, and magnetic field) are expected to overcome the issues on the needs of fully integrated nanosensor systems with their all complete peripheral devices including both software and hardware in society. Moreover, researches concerning low-power sensors and electronics are proposed to minimize the use of power during the device operation and to realize the autonomous sensor systems.
