Soft Skill Course – Self Defense

Self Defense Course 2025

In February 2025 B-IGSM organized a short introduction to self defense course lead by Marno Dahms (Wing Chun Braunschweig). In three hours, the participants learned how to react to differing scenarios, which objects could be used and are allowed in self-defense and what is legally viewed as self defense in Germany.

Summer School: "Optical Nanosystems – Light in Metrology"

Julius Mumme, Florian Wolgast, Meinhard Schilling

In 2024, the annual B-IGSM Summer School focused on optical nanosystems and thus on optics in metrology. The invited speakers gave an overview on current research topics at various universities in Germany and the PTB. The participants learned about integrated photonics, twisted light, laser excitation of thorium isotopes, light-matter interactions, interferometry and spin qubits. Presentations on AFM technologies, the legal situation in the context of international metrology and the use of superconductors in quantum sensors rounded off the scientific program. There were opportunities for (interdisciplinary) networking during a guided tour of the monastery, a getting-to-know event, a scavenger hunt and a cozy evening in the wine tavern.

Soft Skill Course – Communication Issues

Soft-Skill-Kurs Kommunikation

In summer 2023, B-IGSM offered a soft skill course on communication techniques. The two-day course was led by Manfred Schuncke (from 1U Leadership). The participants learned techniques for conflict-free communication at equal footing with different target groups. A focus was placed on de-escalation strategies and the analysis of interests and intentions of the conversational partner. The course offered the opportunity to apply the knowledge gained in numerous practical exercises and enabled the participants to get to know their own communication behavior and that of their counterpart better.

Summer School: "Precision - From Lab to Application"

Kloster Drübeck

In 2023, the B-IGSM offered a thematically diverse summer school that enabled its doctoral students from various scientific disciplines to think outside the box. The speakers reported on how metrology is used in their respective fields, bringing the summer school's main theme of “Precision - From Lab to Application” to life. The participants learned about the diverse uses of metrology in meteorology, in the cultivation and breeding of crops and in charging stations for electric vehicles. Other presentations highlighted the specialized use of spectroscopic methods in metabolic analysis and allergen determination in food. The program was supplemented by presentations on IT security, legal metrology and the mathematical evaluation of measurement results. There were opportunities for social interaction during a joint hike, a getting-to-know event, a scavenger hunt planned by the B-IGSM and a cozy evening in the wine tavern.
