Student research assistant (m/f/d) in the field of object detection for automated battery disassembly – YOLO, Python, OpenCV

The Technical University of Braunschweig is looking for a
student research assistant (20–40 hours/month) for the
Institute of Machine Tools and Manufacturing Technology
(Chair of Manufacturing Technologies & Process Automation).

As part of research projects, the Department of Automated Battery Production at the Institute for Machine Tools and Manufacturing Technology is working on various automation and production-related issues. To strengthen the team, we are looking for a student assistant to support us in the area of object detection for automated battery disassembly.

As part of the VaTreBat research project, joints on battery systems are detected and classified using object detection methods such as R-CNN, YOLO or SSD. Based on this data, a path is planned for a robot-guided handling and laser cutting process.

The following tasks may be part of your job description:

  • Knowledge of object detection using 3D point clouds recorded with line lasers (please address this directly in your application)
  • Research on the state of the art in the field of object detection
  • Programming an algorithm for object detection
  • Creative development of a modular system for generating training data sets
  • Planning and executing various experiments for algorithm validation

You bring with you:

  • Current or completed degree in engineering (CSE, computer science, mechatronics, mechanical engineering, electromobility, systems engineering, etc.) or a related field
  • Good written and spoken German and/or English
  • Creative thinking & ability to contribute your own ideas
  • Willingness to learn, ability to work independently and scientifically, excellent communication skills and ability to work in a team
  • Previous experience or knowledge in the following areas is advantageous but not essential
    • Object detection with Faster R-CNN, YOLO or SSD
    • Programming (Python, OpenCV, PyTorch, TensorFlow)
    • Planning, conducting and evaluating experimental investigations

We offer:

  • Insights into the field of battery dismantling and recycling research
  • Involvement in the development of innovative technologies as part of ongoing research projects
  • Opportunity to take on responsibility and freedom to develop your own creative ideas
  • Opportunity to link your work to writing a thesis and contributing to current publications

Severely disabled persons will be given preference if equally qualified. Proof must be provided. TU Braunschweig strives to reduce underrepresentation in all areas and positions as defined by the NGG. Therefore, applications from women are particularly welcome. Application costs cannot be reimbursed.

Personal data will be stored for the purposes of the application process.

Please send your application by email with a short cover letter, CV and references to:
