In the face of rising emissions and impact on the Earth's atmosphere, the aviation industry has been increasingly looking at minimising the effects of CO2 & other hydrocarbon emissions. The joint project with IFAS (Institute of Jet Propulsion and Turbomachinery) at TU Braunschweig is funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) and aims to investigate the impact the sustainable aviation fuel over flight missions and validate the simulated emission model. Further work involves transferring the developed capabilities to study the impact on other commercial jet engine types.
In the light of tightened emission targets set by the EU through the "Fit for 55" initiative, aircraft manufacturers, commercial jet engine manufacturers and airlines face a rising problem of cutting down emissions. However, a particular problem plaguing the aviation industry is the accurate calculation of particulate emissions over flight missions. Current industry methods are either semi-empirical (meaning they can only estimate based on fleet averages) or are computationally complex & intensive leading to impractically.
To this effect, IFAS (Institute of Jet Propulsion and Turbomachinery) has developed a low-cost simulation software that integrates various aspects to predict emissions over flight missions. However, to increase the accuracy of the predicted emissions, the Institute of Internal Combustion Engines and Fuel Cells (ivb) and other industry partners are assisting in investigating and validating the simulates results.
The aim of the project is to validate the emissions model developed by IFAS and develop reliable data points for Sustainable Aviation Fuel. Furthermore, since there is very less study done on the particulate emissions of Sustainable Aviation Fuel, a particular attention will be paid in this area.
To prove the concept, the initial tests will be conducted on a micro-jet stand at IFAS which will also be connected to the emission measurement chain developed by ivb. Following the conceptual tests, the emission measurement setup will be transferred to test on a commercial jet engine and validate against the simulation results. Further scope of work involves study transferability to a different engine type.
