Brief description

Development of a test procedure for fuel quality by  emission testing.

Question and Motivation

The topic of sustainability and the Renewable Energy Directive is becoming increasingly important. In order to further reduce CO₂ emissions in the transport sector, all current and future vehicles with combustion engines must also be considered. This goal can only be achieved with renewable synthetic drop-in fuels.

New production methods and power-to-X processes can already be used to produce synthetic fuels and components that comply with the European fuel standard EN228. Nevertheless, the compatibility of these new fuels with the emission control systems of the existing fleet has not been fully researched. For this reason, a test methodology has to be developed that can be used to check fuel compatibility.

Procedure and project objective

• Setup of a gasoline engine on a dynmic engine test bench
• Research into the current vehicle fleet and the combustion engines in the field
• Development of a fuel matrix with reference fuels and other fuel blends to validate the methodology
• Dynamic engine tests to identify emission-critical operating ranges
• Stationary engine tests with parameter variations
• Transfer of the stationary tests into a test methodology
