Objectives of the Research Project
The objective of the research project is to determine the potential and feasibility of implementing wastewater reuse techniques in Turkey, especially with the aim to expand the existing water and nutrient resources for agricultural use. In this content, the economical, ecological and technical requirements for wastewater and nutrient reuse in Turkey will be defined and within case studies the application of integrated planning methods for such a reuse of wastewater will be investigated.
Within the research project, existing water resources, the agricultural water consumption and the amount of nutrients needed for agricultural use in Turkey will be determined. The state of municipal and industrial wastewater treatment technologies will be investigated. Specific case studies will be conducted, in order to present precise modular solutions for the implementation of wastewater reuse technologies, especially in regions with high water and nutrient shortage. Concepts to upgrade existing wastewater treatment facilities in regard to recycling of valuable wastewater compounds will be prepared. The main objective of the research work will be to offer adapted solutions for the Turkish demand.
Middle East Technical University will deliver the required data regarding sewage treatment, water and nutrient demand as well as existing water resources in Turkey. The collected data will be evaluated and complemented by mass balances and material flow analysis established by the Technical University of Braunschweig, which will also design process modules and calculate specific unit costs..
