Qualification Program

The qualification program will prepare the early career scientists for environmental impact assessment and environmental problem solving by crossing disciplines on a high international level. The main research areas sediment fluxes, carbon fluxes, water fluxes and water quality, and human dimensions of climate change define the scientific foundation of TransTiP. Understanding and assessing of Earth surface processes will be trained and achieved by joint Sino-German fieldwork on the Tibetan Plateau and combined with common analytical laboratory work at the partner institutions in China and Germany. All doctoral researchers will complete a research stay of at least six months at the partner institution and, international workshops will further facilitate the integration into the scientific community. Scientists from major international and national research centers will be invited to present lectures and seminars. Practical training courses, events independently organized by the trainees and transferable skill courses will complete the qualification of our doctoral researchers for leading positions in academia, research institutes and industry.

Each doctoral researcher will be supervised by a Thesis Committee, which consists of two local advisors one advisor from the partner institution. The doctoral researchers will meet the Thesis Committee at least annually during Summer Schools and/or Research Seminars.

Curriculum

The qualification of a doctoral researcher includes the components field work, experimental laboratory work, and modeling. The training consists of three domains:

The study program is designed to complement the actual research and thesis work in the most time-efficient possible way. The weighting of the doctoral thesis (qualification area A) compared to training in research and course work (qualification area B) incl. training of transferable skills is 2/3 to 1/3 and is expressed in a TransTiP credit point (TransTiP CP) scale.
