Project S5

Sediment flux analysis based on cosmogenic nuclides

Complementary Chinese topic:

Research objectives

The aim of project S5 is to elucidate spatial variations of sediment fluxes from the catchment to the lake in order to disentangle the longer term contribution of glaciated high mountain and more arid low relief sub catchments of Nam Co lake on the other hand. Hydrological monitoring stations equipped with continuously recording multi-probes at the mouth of two sub-catchments will be operated in close collaboration with W1/W2 and the Chinese counterparts. To link data to the sediment record of Nam Co, the elements K, Al, Rb, Ti, Corg, biomarkers and isotopes (O, D) will be measured. Sample analysis will be conducted at NAMORS, the hydro-chemical laboratory at ITP Lhasa campus and the brand-new cosmogenic nuclide laboratory at Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena. This provides the backbone for quantification of longer term spatially lumped catchment-wide chemical and physical erosion rates and supports the establishment of a C balance (C1/C2). In addition, S5 will contribute to validate transport rates and surface change rates derived from remote sensing data (S3). Specific requirements In addition to the general requirements, the successful candidate for the Ph.D. student position in S5 has well documented experience in preparation, laboratory measurements or data analysis related to cosmogenic nuclide analysis. Experiences in high mountain environments are most welcome in order to conduct field work.
