The scholarships are awarded in accordance with the guidelines of the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture (MWK) as follows (at least one criterion must be met):
- to students from non-academic family backgrounds, and
- to students who, due to their refugee status, face particularly difficult starting conditions and circumstances for undertaking a degree course
- for specific social reasons (e.g. involvement in academic or student self-governance, outstanding voluntary work, or the financial difficulties faced by large families)
