Contents: The renewable energy source by means of photovoltaic power supplies is interesting not only in view of environmental protection. In this lecture physical principles of solar cells are presented starting with the sun moving on to absorption of radiation in semiconductors and the pn-junction up to calculating the current-voltage-characteristics. The second part treats fabrication and properties of solar cells made of different materials and in various structures. It ends with a comparing assessment, also regarding the energy balance. This includes thin film cells and concepts o the basis of "non-conventional" semiconductors. Finally, the requirements of the outer circuitry are developed and applications are discussed.
