The Monuments in Transition project is a joint research initiative of the Lower Saxony State Office for the Preservation of Historical Monuments (NLD) and the Institute of Geodesy and Photogrammetry at the Technical University of Braunschweig. Over the course of the two-year project, the partners will investigate how changes to the facades of protected buildings can be documented using a citizen science approach. To this end, an easy-to-use smartphone app is being developed that interested citizens can use to upload historical photos of protected buildings and to take new ones.
The study area is the historic center of Wolfenbüttel, with its impressive number of well-preserved half-timbered houses. The collected photos can be used to create photographic time series that show the changes to a building’s facade over the years. In addition to visually recording these changes, they will also be automatically detected and documented.
A selection of the resulting photos will be included in the NLD’s Monument Atlas to preserve them for the long term and make them available to the public.
