Matthias Bücker Junior Professor for Urban Geophysics at the IGEP

Prof. Matthias Bücker helds the junior professorship for urban geophysics at our institute since January 1st, 2022. He will head the working group of the same name and develop methods that are suitable for exploring the underground in urban areas.

Matthias Bücker studied in Braunschweig and graduated in 2011 with a master's degree in physics. He then worked as a geophysicist in Mexico City for a few years. He then returned to Braunschweig in 2018 via various stations, including at the TU Vienna and the University of Bonn, where he received his doctorate in 2018. On 16.12. he was appointed junior professor by our President, Prof. Angela Ittel.

In his research, he is primarily concerned with methods that can be used to determine the electrical properties of the subsoil over a wide frequency range. Here he develops fundamental physical models that explain and make usable the relationships between electrical properties and petrophysical parameters (e.g. grain size or mineralogy). In applied research, Matthias Bücker focuses on the geophysical investigation of environmental problems (e.g. groundwater damage on brownfield sites or landfill sites), natural hazards (e.g. landslides) and questions related to the consequences of climate change (e.g. drying out of lakes).

We are pleased that Matthias is working with us at the IGEP and wish him many exciting research results.
