The ifs and the Leichtmetallzentrum Soltau (Light Metal Center Soltau)

The Light Metal Center Soltau (LMZS) is a branch of the Institute of Joining and Welding (ifs) at the Technische Universität Braunschweig. In Soltau, it operates a die casting cell for research purposes and is housed at the premises of G. A. Röders. The primary objective of the Light Metal Center Soltau is the continuous further development of the die casting process. The work is supported by the Fördergemeinschaft Druckgießforschung (Support Association for High Pressure Die Casting Research), which was officially founded on 24 October 1986.

The focus of our work is on:

• Suitability for welding of aluminium die castings
• Suitability for adhesive bonding of aluminium die castings
• Process simulation
• Sensors and data acquisition in the die casting process
• Industry 4.0
• Energy efficiency
• Analysis and reduction of the CO2 footprint in the die casting process (life cycle assessment)
• Casting materials

The LMZS works on both public research projects and bilateral contracts.
