Preliminary Aircraft Design

The primary objective of preliminary aircraft design is to identify aircraft configurations suitable to accomplish a given transport mission at an economic optimum while meeting prescribed requirements. This multidisciplinary analysis and optimisation task encompasses the fields of aerodynamics, flight mechanics, engine design, flight control, lightweight structures and manufacturing. Preliminary aircraft design investigations at the Institute of Aircraft Design and Lightweight Structures focus on the development and employment of integrated design methodologies.

Completed projects

DFG-SFB 880 - High Lift for Future Civil Aircraft, research division Z - Multidisciplinary Aircraft Design and Technology Assessment

Funding: DFG (Sonderforschungsbereich)

Duration: 2011 - 2014 (1st Funding period); 2015 - 2018 (2nd Funding period) & 2019

Team: W. Heinze, P. Horst

The Collaborative Research Center 880 (SFB 880) of the German Research Foundation (DFG) investigates the technological fundamentals of low noise civil aircraft with short take-off and landing capabilities.

Subproject Z analyses the impact of different high lift approaches on an overall aircraft design level for optimum design solution identification by employing the Preliminary Aircraft Design and Optimization Program PrADO. For this purpose PrADO is augmented with models describing system aspects and the influence of engine and powered high lift system on aircraft aerodynamics.

LuFO 3 - Project MODYAS
Flattermodell
Bild 1: Darstellung eines Flattermodells

Team: J. Rieke, W.Heinze, P.Horst
