About the Institute for biochemical engineering

The Institute for Bioprocess Engineering (ibvt) at the Technical University of Braunschweig combines an understanding of biological systems with integrated process development and technical scaling. We develop bioprocesses for healthcare and the pharmaceutical industry, as well as for a sustainable bioeconomy—from biological systems through bioreactors to product recovery.

Our core competencies lie in bioreactor and reaction engineering, bioprocess integration and process optimization, as well as downstream processing. Other areas of focus include microbiomes and biofilms, as well as biorefinery technologies and the use of lignocellulosic feedstocks.

As an institute within the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, we combine research in the life sciences and engineering. To this end, we collaborate with BRICS, the Center for Pharmaceutical Process Engineering (PVZ), and other partners both within and outside TU Braunschweig. Together with research institutions and industry, we develop, scale up, and validate biotechnological processes for technical applications.
