Research Areas

The research program covers problems and aspects of the following areas:

  • Air-structure interaction
Moving structures interact with the surrounding air flow, e.g. flow around aircraft wings, wind effects on buildings and structures, birds.
  • Water-structure interaction
Solids interact with liquids, e.g. liquid storage tanks under earthquake excitation, elastic structures in flowing water, fish.
  • Acoustics with fluid-structure interaction
Sound propagation problems can be described by linearized model equations. Certain physical properties of the fluid need not be studied as thorough as for the problems under 1) and 2).
  • The planned research projects organized in this manner are oriented towards practical e ngineering applications and are described in detail in the following chapter. Common aspects of all research projects are model development, discretization, and solution of the coupled problem.

To guarantee effective interdisciplinary research, all research areas are supervized by more than one department at a time.
